12 Step Groups

The use of 12-step groups in the context of getting and staying sober has been occurring for over half a century. Although these groups are not affiliated with any cause, treatment center or otherwise, they do offer principles for a new way of life in which the obsession to use or drink has been lifted.

Countless 12-step groups have formed over the years ranging from issues such as alcoholism and drug addiction to gambling and overeating. The lessons contained in the 12-steps provide guidelines for daily living on a spiritual basis. Some people who come to treatment expecting a scientific, clear-cut approach to recovery find 12-step groups hard to swallow. Though these groups do not demand their members believe anything using spirituality as a means to ensure daily abstinence is an important principle meant to be learned over time.

Many rehabilitation centers use the 12-steps to help their patients create a solid beginning in recovery. The 12-step program can be related to any addiction, drug or otherwise, and suggests that complete abstinence from all mind-altering substances is the only way to begin to overcome addictive desire. Sometimes treatment centers offer 12-step meetings on location for their patients to attend, and in other cases the centers take their patients out to meetings in the area. Still other times patients work out of 12-step workbooks and are strongly urged to find a sober 12-step network once the have completed the treatment process.

12-step groups do not claim to have all the answers to drug addiction or alcoholism and are not the authority on any related issues. However, the 12-step program has worked to help many recovering addicts and alcoholics find a way of life that is not ruled by substances. At Gulf Coast Recovery we believe that the principles found in the 12-steps can lead to a happy and free lifestyle. Our patients have used these steps to regain broken relationships and achieve goals they once though were impossible. If you suffer from addiction and have not given the principles of these programs a chance, call us today and find out how they can work in your life.
